Walayar Dam is a dam in Palakkad district of Kerala, south
India. This dam is constructed across the Walayar River which
is a tributary of Kalpathipuzha River. It was completed
and opened in 1964. It is one of the major
sources of irrigation in the region. Most of the
water in this river is passed to the inner places of
Walayar. The dam holds a larger reservoir area,
and the persons living near the reservoir area utilizes the water
from the walayar dam as their main water source for irrigation.
Currently the water held inside the reservoir is less due to
lesser rain at Walayar. The reservoir area is very scenic and
has better scope for tourism.
NEARBY DESTINATION - KANNADI AQUEDUCT BRITISH BRIDGE
The British bridge is one of famous historical
landmark aqueduct located in Karingarapully,
Palakkad district, Kerala. Even though it is also
a canal it is known as “British paalam”. The river
Bharathapuzha (only river that flows through Palakkad ) can be
crossed using this bridge. It is located from about 500m inside
the Karingarapully junction. This bridge was used to circulate
water throughout the district from the Malampuzha dam. This
canal which is now popularly known as Karingarapully canal is
still used to circulate water around the district for irrigation purposes.
It is located at an offbeat place but it is one of a historical
landmark in Palakkad. This bridge has been a location in
many famous Malayalam movies like Jamna pyari (2015) , Odiyan
(2018) etc. It is also a famous location for photo-shoot and
also a quiet evening out
